Seven Villages, One Bay
Kaštela takes its name from the castles (kaštel) built along this shore in the 15th and 16th centuries. Noble families and church orders from Split and Trogir fortified their estates here as protection against Ottoman raids, and a village grew up around each one. Seven of them survive as the settlements you see today, from Kaštel Sućurac in the east to Kaštel Štafilić in the west.
Several of the castles are worth a short walk. Kaštilac in Kaštel Gomilica, a small fortress built by Benedictine nuns and joined to the shore by a stone bridge, appeared as Braavos in Game of Thrones. Vitturi Castle in Kaštel Lukšić houses the town museum and is tied to the local legend of Miljenko and Dobrila, often called Croatia's Romeo and Juliet. In Kaštel Štafilić, an olive tree estimated to be around 1,500 years old still grows near the sea.
Today Kaštela is a lived-in town rather than a resort. Most visitors stay in private apartments and holiday homes, with a few hotels along the bay. It makes a practical, quieter base between Split and Trogir, with small pebble beaches and long stretches of seafront promenade. Evenings are quiet, with konobas and cafés along the waterfront in most villages.

In July and August the main road can be slow in the late afternoon, so allow extra time if you are heading into Split.
